Supervision Foundations and Professional Responsibilities

This session focuses on the role of the Supervising Social Worker in providing effective oversight, support, and challenge to foster carers. Participants will explore statutory and professional responsibilities, gaining clarity on how supervision, support, and risk management differ and intersect in practice.

The course will develop practical supervision skills to support foster carers’ resilience and effectiveness, while also addressing how to handle difficult or challenging conversations with confidence and professionalism. By the end of the session, participants will be better equipped to balance supportive relationships with accountability and safeguarding responsibilities.

Aims and objectives:

By the end of this course, participants will: 

• Explain the statutory and professional responsibilities of the Supervising Social Worker.
• Distinguish between supervision, support, and risk management in working with foster carers.
• Apply a range of supervision skills and approaches to support foster carers effectively.
• Demonstrate strategies for managing and engaging in difficult or challenging conversations.
