What is this course about?
Behind every successful fostering experience is a whole family working together. Meeting the Needs of Children of Foster Carers equips foster carers and fostering services with the knowledge, confidence and strategies to ensure that all children in fostering households feel safe, supported and heard.
Developed in collaboration with adults who grew up in fostering households, and informed by our foster carer members, this course brings real-life insight together with professional expertise to improve outcomes for children and young people.
What you’ll learn
By the end of this course, you will:
- Understand how fostering can impact the children of foster carers
- Learn how to prepare children for fostering, including within kinship families
- Gain practical strategies to support and safeguard children, including protective care approaches
- Explore how to build healthy relationships between children in care and carers’ own children through clear boundaries
- Develop therapeutic skills to listen to and act on children’s wishes and feelings
- Confidently manage situations where needs conflict, supporting stability
- Understand how fostering services can meet regulatory expectations and provide effective support

Delivered by an expert in the field
The course is led by Leigh-Anne Reilly, a registered social worker with 15 years’ experience working with children and families. Specialising in attachment and child development, Leigh-Anne brings deep expertise and practical insight into supporting children with diverse and complex needs.
