Promoting good practice in the assessment and support of Kinship Carers

A training course for fostering services and practitioners involved in assessing and supporting kinship carers. This course will cover the legal and policy framework for kinship care, including the assessment process, and the kinship care strategy.


The course will develop particpants understanding of the needs of kinship carers and the common challenges they face. It will focus on the importance of establishing trusting relationships when assessing kinship famlies and best practice in the delivery of meaningful, high-quality support. 

Aims:

  • To enhance participants’ understanding of the legal, policy, and practice frameworks that underpin kinship care.
  • To build the skills and confidence of practitioners involved in assessing and supporting kinship carers.
  • To strengthen the quality and consistency of support offered to kinship families through informed, reflective practice.

     

Objectives:

By the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the legal and regulatory requirements surrounding kinship care and how these apply to assessment and ongoing support.
  • Explain the key needs, strengths, and challenges commonly experienced by kinship carers.
  • Undertake quality assessments which embrace unique dynamics of kinship foster care.
  • Apply communication and engagement approaches to support building trust with kinship families.
  • Reflect on your own professional role and practice, developing skills and approaches to support kinship carers.
