Developing Skills in Life Story Work using an attachment and trauma informed approach

This course introduces the principles and practice of life story work, exploring a range of approaches and the key skills needed to support children effectively. Grounded in an understanding of child development, attachment and trauma, it emphasises inclusive, trauma-informed methods that promote safety, sensitivity and empowerment while recognising each child’s unique identity and experiences.

Aims and objectives:

  • Explain what we mean by life story work
  • Explore the range of approaches used in life story work
  • Consider the impact of child development, attachment and trauma when undertaking life story work
  • Identify the required skills for effective life story work
  • Think about how a child can be supported through life story work
  • Explore how to integrate all aspects of a child within their life story including race, gender, age, culture, disability and religion
  • Apply trauma informed approaches to ensure safety, sensitivity and empowerment throughout life story work
