‘It makes you feel less alone’: our Young People’s Advisory Board at Music Makes Glasgow

Music, creativity and connection were at the heart of a recent day out for The Fostering Network’s Young People’s Advisory Board in Scotland, as members joined the celebrations at Music Makes Glasgow.

Invited by the staff, volunteers and board members at SoundLab, we enjoyed a day that celebrated young people’s talents and created opportunities to meet, talk and get involved.

SoundLab is a charity helping young people fulfil their creative potential through free music, media, digital and arts tuition. Its work particularly supports care experienced young people, those with lived experience of displacement, and young people with disabilities or additional support needs.

Getting creative and being visible

Our preparations started before the event, with Board members designing their own t-shirts to represent the group. A special thank you goes to our Policy Officer, Hope Lynch-Gerrard, for putting her ironing skills to good use!

On the morning of the event, we took a walk through Glasgow to catch up and cheer on runners finishing the Great Scottish Run. The atmosphere provided a lovely start to a day filled with encouragement and celebration.

At Music Makes Glasgow, we were proud to host a table and help raise the visibility of the Board. Our handmade t-shirts sparked conversations, giving us a chance to talk about the group and why young people’s voices matter. We were particularly pleased to see our Scotland Country Director, Pamela Graham, wearing a t-shirt made by one of our young people.

There was plenty to try at the other stalls too, from animation and instrument making to glitter tattoos and clay modelling.

Celebrating young people’s talents

In the arena, we enjoyed performances by young people whose hard work and creativity shone throughout the show.

Highlights included an MCing session that encouraged performers to use their words creatively and brought a special energy to the room. A group of young people with additional support needs raised the roof, while solo performers showed real courage as they stepped forward to play their instruments beautifully.

It was a joy to be part of an event where young people could express themselves and be celebrated for their talents.
