Career workshops for young people in foster care

As part of the Fostering Attainment and Achievement service we are running a number of career workshops throughout Northern Ireland for young people in foster carer aged 14 - 17.

 

We are running a series of exciting interactive workshops for young people aged 14-17 which will give them a taster of different employment options – from animation and hair & beauty to football and outdoor pursuits.

Sessions include an opportunity for young people to find out about the world of professional football with the Ryan McBride Foundation, as well as a three-day animation course with Irish Television Film Award winner Joel Simon. There’s a workshop for everyone, so continue reading to find out about all the sessions and how to register.

Pathways into food service

When:  Wednesday 14 February 10:30am-12:00pm

Where: McDonalds, 8 Edward Street Lurgan

Young people are welcome to join this session to hear directly from staff on their journey working for McDonalds, including training opportunities, benefits and interview tips.

Building confidence with skills for life and work

When:  Monday 12 February 10.30am - 11.30am

Where: Rutledge College Carrickfergus Office, 33-35 High Street, Carrickfergus

Unsure about your future career options? Come and learn about the Skills for Life and Work programme run by Rutledge Training. This workshop will give insight into how the programme helps build the confidence and skills you need to find work. You will hear how Skills for Life can help you work towards recognised qualifications and get work experience in a choice of industries – including childcare, business and administration, joinery, creative arts and digital technology, beauty, hair and barbering, health and social care, engineering as well as customer service, stores and warehousing.

Animation in the film industry

When:  Tuesday 13 - Thursday 15 February, 10.00am - 3.00pm

Where: Screenworks, Into Film, 42 Dublin Road, Belfast BT2 7HN

Are you interested in a future career in the film industry? This three-day course delivered by Joel Simon, animator and  Irish Television Film Award winner for short animation, will help you create your own mini animation production.  You will learn how to create a portfolio, market yourself to the film industry and hear about the skills needed to succeed.  This is a great opportunity for young people in Year 10 to Year 14 to work directly with a professional animator and discover more about the opportunities in film in Northern Ireland.

Hair and beauty  

When:  Thursday 15 February 10.30am - 1.00pm

Where: The Academy Hair & Beauty Training School, Portadown

This practical workshop will give you an opportunity to find out more about a career in hair and beauty while enjoying demonstrations and getting pampered at the same time!

Outdoor pursuits

When:  Monday 12 February 10.30am - 12.30pm

Where: Tollymore National Outdoor Centre, Newcastle

Interested in working in outdoor pursuits? Come and join us for a tour of the Tollymore National Outdoor Centre where you will hear information on their instructor training programme plus the skills and needed for this role.  You will also get to chat with current trainee instructors and work with some of the equipment.

Find out about the world of professional football

Where: Ryan McBride Foundation, Derry City Football

Explore your pathways into football in partnership with The Fostering Network and The Ryan Mc Bride Foundation

Are you interested in all things football? Come along to the Ryan McBride Foundation for a practical and fun taster session. This session will give you the opportunity to chat with the coaches and gain an insight into the world of professional football. Come along and meet those involved who can chat to you about their journey into coaching. Find out about the commitment needed for training programmes and the sports science behind nutrition, fitness, strength and conditioning.

Career tasters at Randox Science Park

When:  Monday 12 February 2:30pm-4:00pm

Where: Randox Laboratories, Antrim

Randox Laboratories develop innovative solutions for hospitals, research, food testing, forensics, veterinary labs and life sciences.  Randox technicians will provide an insight into careers at the company and give a guided tour of the science park – including the manufacturing and engineering areas as well as the laboratories.To register a young person for any of the above taster sessions please email events@fostering.net stating the name of the young person and the name of the session/sessions they wish to attend.
