Since its launch in October 2023, Men Who Foster has been championing the vital role of male foster carers across Northern Ireland. The initiative began with two evening training sessions designed to build understanding, confidence, and connection among men in fostering roles.
To date, 103 men have completed the training, many continuing their journey through monthly Zoom catch-ups, safe, informal spaces to share experiences, swap advice, and offer emotional support. For those who prefer meeting in person, the project runs regular group meetups and one-to-one support sessions, helping men build strong support networks while also looking after their wellbeing.
The positive response to Men Who Foster has encouraged plans to develop local hubs and to hold the first Northern Ireland Men Who Foster appreciation event in November this year. This growth has been made possible thanks to recognition at the Regional Social Work and Social Care Dragon’s Den, where Rob Ng-Yu-Tin, Craig Lyttle, and foster carers Paul Lynch and Marshall Donaldson pitched for funding and proudly came away as joint first-place winners. The award celebrates the importance of recognising men’s voices and contributions in fostering families.
At its heart, Men Who Foster continues to build a network where every man who fosters can find connection, understanding, and encouragement, all of which lead to better outcomes for children in care.
