About this webinar:

Join us for this webinar focusing on the challenges surrounding mental health support for children and young people in care. Meeting children's needs and supporting them with complex trauma, as well as managing risk without specialist mental health support can be difficult for carers and practitioners. Complex mental health systems and long wait times, can compound these difficulties. This webinar will highlight these issues and acknowledge the hard work of practitioners and carers continuing to support children and young people in these circumstances. Different approaches to providing mental health support will be discussed, as well as signposting and sharing of best practice and relevant resources. Speakers include:

  • Charity Young Minds will be joining us to share the work they do in supporting young people and carers around the mental health of young people. Young Minds provide support, advice and guidance, including a valuable parent / carer helpline. www.youngminds.org.uk
  • Dr Eva A Sprecher will be joining us to share the findings from a national research report produced in partnership with CoramBAAF, with support from UK Trauma Council (a project of the Anna Freud) and National Children’s Bureau. The report focuses on improving evidence-informed mental health services for children in care. Dr Eva A Sprecher is a research fellow at the Child Trauma and Recovery Group at UCL and at Anna Freud. Eva is also the co-founder and trustee of the not-for-profit children's residential home provider Lighthouse Pegagogy Trust. The research focuses on understanding how we can better support the mental health of young people living in care. Eva will be sharing findings from working on some of the largest research projects including children living in care in the UK - including the ReThink Programme and the MyVoice project.
  • A local authority foster carer with experience of caring for children with mental health needs.
