As the new term starts, I’m grateful that I’m beyond the age to be dragged around the shops to pick up new items of uniform, including shoes with enough room to grow into. Or in the latter educational years, packing up the car to be greeted with the bare brick walls of a new university hall, armed with only a familiar duvet cover and a wardrobe of decidedly odd clothes.

We’ve all done it. We arrive at a support group meeting singing the praises of the child who has just arrived to live with us, and who had a reputation for very challenging behaviour but it is now an angel. We give ourselves a little pat on the back. It was easy really. We started as we meant to carry on and put in place the boundaries for good behaviour, and the child or young person responded. There was also some suggestion that there might have been a personality clash between the child and the previous carer’s family, so all in all the move was better for everyone. The child is settling in well and all is rosy.

Cyber-bullying really is one of the dark sides of the internet. It is the use of the internet and technology to deliberately hurt, embarrass and abuse others and can be a one off or recurring. We, as the grown-ups who are responsible for the safety of young people, are in an odd position because we are protecting them from harm on forms of communication that didn’t exist when we grew up.
