Pioneering programme which prevents children from entering care system comes to Wales

A pioneering programme which has so far prevented 194 children from entering the care system will launch in Wales this week. 

Step Up Step Down, which is run by the UK’s leading fostering charity The Fostering Network, is partnering with Pembrokeshire County Council to revolutionise the support given to families at risk of breaking down.

The Fostering Network welcomes the Welsh Government’s decision to create a national register of foster carers

The UK’s leading fostering charity, The Fostering Network, has welcomed the Welsh Government’s commitment to create a national register of foster carers, having campaigned for this for many years.

Yesterday the Government published its response to the Children, Young People and Education Committee’s report: ‘If not now, when? Radical reform for care-experienced children and young people’. It agreed to work with Social Care Wales to scope and fund the delivery of a national register for foster carers.

Children’s social care market study: Response from The Fostering Network

We welcome the recommendations set out in the Competition and Markets Authority’s (CMA) final report published yesterday that sets clearer expectations at a national, regional and local level in England, Scotland and Wales to ensure that all children in care are living in placements that meets all their needs.

Proposed changes to the IRM for qualifying determinations (Wales)

The Independent Reviewing Mechanism (IRM) manages the process by which prospective or approved foster carers, can seek a review of a ‘qualifying determination’ made by a fostering provider. This includes local authorities and independent providers. Qualifying determinations are made where an agency is proposing not to approve an individual as a foster carer, or to terminate or make a change to the individual’s terms of approval.
