As a key influencer in young people’s lives, foster carers play a major role in the decision-making process, along with teachers, advisers, and their peers. Some young people may find it hard to think of their future and make plans due to an underlying problem of believing&nbsp;there is little point in planning for the future. The first step should be to make them believe they can change their future and with your help, it can happen!</p> <p><a href="/talking-about-higher-education-and-future">The Talking about Higher Education Factsheet</a> has information and advice about&nbsp;how foster carers&nbsp;can provide&nbsp;emotional and practical support in the transition from foster care to university life.</p> <h3>Wales</h3> <h4><strong>Making it Happen</strong></h4> <p>The Fostering Network, with funding from The Welsh Government, has published a magazine Making it Happen to complement A Foster Carer's Guide to Education in Wales.</p> <p>The aim of this magazine is to inspire foster carers to help fostered children and young people in their care raise their ambitions and fulfil their potential in education. Each left-hand page lists Aimee’s diary entry while each right-hand page covers advice for teachers, designated staff in educational provisions, social workers and the wider circle within corporate parenthood.<br /> This is her diary. Aimee became looked after during her last year in primary school as a result of neglect and physical abuse in the family. Jennie became her foster carer after Aimee had spent a few weeks in an emergency placement. Aimee’s Year 6 teacher supported her during her last months in primary school and asked Aimee to stay in touch by writing a diary and sharing it with her.<br /> This diary focuses on Aimee’s learning needs, but when she is deprived of friends, suffers physical harm, is anxious and depressed and loses her sense of belonging, then her education inevitably suffers.<br /> This diary takes the reader through from the time Aimee starts secondary school to the point when she is 18, on the cusp of leaving care and preparing for adult life. Foster carers often need more holistic support for their child; this can be promoted by engaging proactively with schools and other services and foster carers developing their own knowledge, skills and confidence. Our nation-wide #TickTheBox campaign encourages people with care experience to tick the box when applying to study via UCAS to say they have spent time in care, so they can get the support they may need, to help them enter and thrive at college or university.</p> <p>This year, the campaign will run during care leavers week from the 25 October - 1 November 2023.</p> <p>From 2008-2022, the number of people ticking the box more than doubled – but there is still a long way to go.</p> <h3>Why is there a campaign?</h3> <p>We know that people with care experience are unrepresented at higher and further education and many do not know about the support available to them and we want to change that. </p> <p>The campaign aims to raise awareness of the importance of people with care experience ticking the box on their UCAS application to say they have experience of care so that universities and colleges know that they are entitled to support before and during their studies. It also aims bust the common myth and reassure those with concerns about who the information will be shared with when they tick the box, highlighting that the information will only be shared with the people who need to know to support them.</p> <p>The campaign also aims to help raise aspirations for those with care experience who may or may not be considering higher or further education, showing them the possibilities open to them by sharing the amazing stories of people with care experience and their journeys at university or higher education and why ticking the box made such a difference. It is also a chance to celebrate the good practice from higher and further education institutions and encourage all to provide excellent support to people with care experience so they can enter and thrive at university</p> <p> </p> <h3>What support is available?</h3> <p>The support on offer will be different at every college and university, and can range from additional financial support, in the form of a bursary, to practical support to help care leavers settle in, find accommodation or manage finances. You can find out what support you can access at each institution on <a href="https://becomecharity.org.uk/get-support/propel/">Become’s Propel website</a>.</p> <p>Some universities will take care-experience into account when making an offer. This is called a contextualised or adjusted offer, and is often a grade or two lower than a standard offer.
