A sunny welcome to the latest news from the campaigns team at The Fostering Network.
The latest State of the Nation’s Foster Care report highlighted that foster carers do not always feel treated as an equal member of the team and they are not getting the support they need to do their vital role. A charter can help to address these issues by setting clear expectations for how foster carers should be treated, trained and supported. The agreement can also help to build understanding between fostering services and foster carers.
In response the launch of the independent Care Review in Scotland yesterday, chief executive of The Fostering Network, Kevin Williams, said:
'We welcome the launch of the Care Review and look forward to continuing to support Fiona Duncan as chair and working with the group to share the views of our members in Scotland.
The UK General Election takes place on 8 June, and despite the short notice it is nevertheless an important opportunity to both raise the profile, and campaign to improve, foster care.
With this in mind, we are asking everybody with an interest in foster care to promote The Fostering Network’s foster carers’ charter to any prospective councillors they meet. Having a charter in place helps foster carers get the recognition they deserve and need to provide children with the best possible care.
As the campaigns manager at The Fostering Network, I am increasingly being asked where The Fostering Network stands on the idea of foster carers being employed, with full workers’ rights, by a fostering service.
Welcome to the November campaigns blog. This has been a really busy month for the campaigns team!
